The image captures a serene scene from Coonoor, a hill station in the nilgiri hills. Coonoor is known for its aromatic tea plantations and attracts travelers from all across the globe.
During my recent visit to Coonoor, I went on a trek amidst the lush green tea plantations and got an opportunity to see this picturesque panorama of Coonoor’s main town from the top of a plantation. This revealed a different side of Coonoor to me. I had always envisioned Coonoor to be a hill station with tea plantations, cold misty air and a place full of tranquility.
The trail started at the bottom of the plantation which eventually ascended up to the main town of Coonoor, where we were greeted by the horn of the toy train which had just arrived at the station from ooty. The main road led up to a market which was bustling with activity. The passengers were trying to board the bus at the bus stop, the fruit vendors were trying to sell their fruits, multiple oil vendors were trying to convince their passengers that their eucalyptus oil was the best. There were also an infinite number of tea shops, each of them varieties of tea.
We visited one of the shops selling tea, apart from the aromatic smell of tea in the shop, they had around 250 varieties of tea.
Venturing beyond the market’s end, we embarked on a narrow trail meandering through the plantations to visit Cafe Diem. This cafe was heaven. Not only was I impressed by their culinary skills, but also the breathtaking view of the whole town (Image 1). The multi coloured houses nestled among the tea plantations at various levels,reminded me of the Amalfi coast. In the distance, the church adorned with white marble added to the mesmerizing view. After a scrumptious meal, we had to bid adieu to this panoramic view and headed back to our villa.
Trekking or just walking around a town offer an unparalleled opportunity to experience the traditions and cultures of that place and interact with people.
My trekking experience stands out as one of the most memorable experiences I have had and will always be something that I will cherish forever.
