The Frantic Race to Finals Week

The start of this year was also the start of a two week long sprint to the finals week but even then, campus has been buzzing with activity. The highlight has of course been the Sankranthi, Pongal, and Lohri celebrations that have taken place over a span of three days. A bonfire signalled the start of the Pongal celebrations, while also celebrating Lohri. A special Sankranthi lunch, games, movie screening, and kite flying also took place. The highlight of the celebrations was by far the Kollatam performance that took place during the cultural night.

The start of this month also brought about festivities of another sort - exhibitions! We’ve had 3 uniquely special exhibitions. Shreya Kabadi and Dishita Sharma (Ren) hosted a multimedia art exhibition “Speak up: Identities hindering classroom experiences.” The exhibition shed light on struggles in learning spaces due to barriers that result from elements of identity, and highlighted the complexities of intersectionality. The students of the 'Sustainability and Climate Change' and 'Alternative Energy on a Finite Planet' courses jointly put together “Eco-Frontiers 2024”, a two-day exhibition that showcased the impacts of a range of issues through a zine, interactive games, photos, art, short films, and so much more, all curated by the students themselves. On the very same day, the ARTS228 Music From Mud Pottery Practicum class of '24 also presented their exhibition of the clay musical instruments they’ve been working on this trimester.

When it comes to the world of sporting at Krea, the gym rats at Krea exhibited and showcased their strength at 2024’s first bench press event, “Bench it Out.” The Volleyball teams for 2023-2024 have also been announced. Anoop and Pranav Jain are Captain and Vice Captain of the men’s team comprising Monu, Satya, Divij, Abhay, Abhinav, Yadagiri, Ayaan, Ganesh, Aditya. Maya and Shruti are Captain and Vice Captain of the women’s team comprising Deesha, Avanti, Laranya, Prachee, Ritanya, Ketaki, Ishitha and Antim.

This trimester we celebrated the launch of “PSYCH - The psychology society” which held its induction session that involved a mix and mingle session, fun games, and a poster making session. Krea hosted and took part in the second meeting supported by the Indo-US Science and Technology Forum (IUSSTF) grant. The event is a hybrid meeting involving scientists from India, USA and Europe. Researchers from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, University of Alabama, Physical Research Laboratory, Indian Institute of Science and University of Helsinki also visited Krea.

On the academic front, we have had a staggering number of talks over the last three weeks.  A Psychology talk on “Money is a condition of possibility of psychoanalysisby Prof. Ian Parker and a round table discussion on “Child as Method” with Prof. Erica Burman was held. Science talks on “Solar Storms: The Dark Side of the Sun” and  “Origin of Stellar Energy” were conducted by Dr Ranadeep Sarkar and Mr Sandeep Kumar respectively. A Social Sciences talk From Worldview to Public Policy: Searching for Evidence in Social Sciences” was given by Prof. Sachidanand Sinha.  A Literature talk Translation and the Margins” was given by Prof. Sowmya Dechamma CC. A Data Science talk “Navigating the Ethical Horizon: A Journey into Responsible AI” was held by Dr Vishnu S Pendyala. And finally Professor Akeel Bilgrami conducted a talk on “How did ’the world’ go from being a place to live in to a place to master and control?” and also took part in the latest edition of Khirki Conversations “What is Humanistic Inquiry? : Exploring the Challenges.”

Our campus has been abound with energy and filled with festivities and events over the past few weeks, but sadly, Krea suffered a great loss recently. Team Leher would like to pay our respects to Krea’s librarian Mr Chandrasekar Vithal who unfortunately passed away on the 7th of January 2024 due to health conditions. A memorial gathering to offer condolences was held on the 12th of January in the academic block. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. May he rest in peace.
