Beyond the Classroom

Welcome back folks! Let’s take a deep dive into what’s been happening on campus in the second half of February 2024. Student-led events have been at the centre of our campus culture in these past two weeks.

The BBA Fest was held on 24th and 25th February. “Ukiyo” meaning "the floating world" in Japanese, was a celebration filled with stalls, sports, competitions, performances etc.

The Art Exchange by Purnaa Muthu was held on 29th February, where people made art in any medium which was then exchanged with other participants. Doodles, haikus, sketches and more were on full display or rather exchanged.

Kanika Dua, Pravalika Gumma and Trisha Putturaya, three second year ENVS students have started work on the second edition of their zine. The theme is birds and their disappearance due to environmental degradation and climate change. They are calling for submissions in prose, poetry, diary entries, art, photography etc. Do check your inboxes for further details on how to send in your work.

Speak Up 2.0 is being organised by Shreya Kabadi and Pratibha Khullar, it will focus on  intersectional struggles, including caste, religion, and mental health, and how students manage and navigate these complexities. To participate and help organise, please check for further details in your email inbox.

Shreya Kabadi and Sagarika Reddy want to create an archive of collective experiences of the queer community at Krea. The exhibition aims to serve as both a personal record and a platform for protest and inquiry.

Club events have also sorted out calendars these past two weeks.

Mudra, the Dance Club and the Gaming club hosted a JustDance night. The skills club held a spoken Tamil workshop. The Music Club, Layam held a musician’s mixer, an open mic night, and a showcase of their upcoming concert on Indian film music.

The sporting community has also been buzzing. Bolt 2023-24 has begun! The opening ceremony was held on 27th February and was sponsored by Pepsi and Mountain Dew. Stay tuned to find out who will come out on top; Athena, Ares, Poseidon or Persephone.

“NetWars” Krea’ first intercollegiate tournament sponsored by FoodieBox was held on 26th Feb. Six teams, two each from IIIT Sri City, SIAS and IFMR participated in the tournament. The IIIT teams came first and second.

For the adventures, SAHAS hosted a trip to Sriharikota to view the launch of GSLV F-14 INSAT 3D-S mission on February 17th. Blown away by what we say would be an understatement.

Our Peer Support Volunteers held a “Colour Your Heart Out” event which used reflective and calming activities such as mandala colouring and heart map creation, to help connect with the PSVs.

Following a round of interviews, members of the Constitutional Amendments Ad Hoc Team were selected. They are Johanna Hashmi, Anshika Jain, Omkar Hiremath, Varun Raiji, Urvi Bhatia, and Uditi Lunawat.

On the academic front, we’ve had a very special event take place. A panel discussion on “From Liberation to Marriage Equality: Reflections on Struggle for Recognition” was held by Krea’s diversity collective consisting of Dr Geeti Das, Dr Sambiah Gundimenda and professor Sayantan Datta. A talk on “Others without otherness: Ramchandra Gandhi and the mirror of consciousness” was held by Dr James Madaio. A Krea Politics Talk on “2024 Lok Sabha Elections and Muslim Voters” was held by Professor Mirza Asmer Beg.
